Missing

One is often led to think cats can take care of themselves perfectly well; that they can be on their own, be indipendent. It may be so, then when a cat goes missing you can never be sure it’s in the critter’s sincerest desire to get found or not.

Long-term memory

Sight is a highly intellectual sense. Any other sense is more instinctual and direct, maybe even more effective. Sight became our dominant sense long ago; maybe it’s always been dominant in humans. But some mental processes don’t necessarily need a high degree of intellectualization to work properly. The outcome of some of these processes is more dynamic and powerful if less of the rational side is involved. Images are not proustian madeleines. They’re too stylized for that involuntary act of memory and they rely more on reason as memory retrievers. Their effects on our reminiscing abilities is partly weakened and corrupted by rational intellect.
